Carolyn Kaster/AP/FileUS national security officials have to weigh whether publicly calling attention to disinformation might inadvertently amplify the very message they’re trying to bat down. In both scenarios, federal officials favored a muted public response, largely choosing to let state and local governments take the lead. State and local officials run elections and are more trusted voices in their communities, but how can federal officials act decisively to support them? “It’s a trick box,” said Adam Hickey, who worked on election security issues for the Justice Department’s National Security Division. “[W]e prioritize tabletop exercises that integrate the range of cyber, physical, and operational threats election officials may encounter,” Conley said in a statement to CNN.

So he enrolled, starting with the prerequisite classes that will ultimately lead him to a master's degree in machine learning. Beyer is part of almost every group of House lawmakers working on AI. He was also a member of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy's working group on AI, which could be resurrected under Speaker Mike Johnson. Obernolte, who has a masters degree in artificial intelligence, said there's no shortage of smart lawmakers on AI, including Beyer.

Glenn Youngkin isn’t on the ballot this year, but his push for a new conservative direction for the Republican Party is. The discipline extended beyond the 10 candidates Youngkin endorsed in competitive primaries, so as to keep distractions at bay. Virginia Democrats, who would normally use such a post to put the entire GOP in an awkward position, did not apparently even notice. Still, there isn’t a lot of evidence that the Virginia Democratic Party sees Youngkin as any sort of liability for the GOP — he isn’t featured negatively in any of their ads, for example. “What we have found out over the last two years is that that vest-wearing, affable, basketball playing dad is really a MAGA Extremist,” said Virginia Democratic Party Chair Susan Swecker.

Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina joked that he's too sane to assume the House speakership. Fellow Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia playfully told Graham that he could compete for the position. The conversation came after the House on Tuesday voted 216-210 to remove McCarthy from the role. AdvertisementAdvertisementRepublican Sen. Lindsey Graham doesn't think he's up for the job of Speaker of the House — but that's because he's not crazy enough to apply. "Hey Lindsey, you know you don't have to be a member of the House to be chosen speaker," the Virginia Democrat told Graham.

WASHINGTON, April 25 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday formally launched his 2024 re-election bid, promising protection against right-wing extremists and highlighting the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump. Below is some reaction to Biden's announcement:FORMER U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, LEADING REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE FOR 2024 NOMINATION:"With such a calamitous and failed presidency, it is almost inconceivable that Biden would even think of running for reelection," Trump said in a statement. "Joe Biden feels very strongly that our country got off track in our pursuit of a more perfect union. REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE:"Biden is so out-of-touch that after creating crisis after crisis, he thinks he deserves another four years. DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE:"It's official: President Biden and Vice President Harris are running for reelection to stand up for democracy and defend our fundamental freedoms," the DNC said in a post on Twitter.
GOP Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers called TikTok "an immediate threat" and wants it banned in the US. McMorris Rodgers said she's deeply concerned about the user data of millions of US TikTok users. "I would say there's an immediate threat via TikTok from the Chinese Communist Party. "What the hearing made clear to me was that TikTok should be banned in the United States of America to address the immediate threat and we also need a national data privacy law," she added. McMorris Rodgers pointed to Tiktok and parent company ByteDance as having ties to the Chinese government, which she said is a major risk to Americans.

WASHINGTON — A highly anticipated bipartisan Senate bill to give the president the authority to respond to threats posed by TikTok and companies like it will be unveiled Tuesday afternoon by Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Mark Warner, a committee spokeswoman told CNBC. "TikTok is one of the potentials," that could be targeted by the bill, Warner said. Warner's bill comes nearly a week after the House Foreign Affairs Committee advanced a Republican-sponsored bill that aims to do much of the same thing. The House legislation passed the GOP-controlled committee 24-16 along party lines, with unanimous GOP support and no Democratic votes.
